Like its close relative the apple, the pear is believed to have originated in central Asia in the region of the Caucasus Mountains.  Like many popular fruits, the pear is a member of the Rosaceae family -- an ancient family of flowering plants that dates back 100 million years ago.  The origin of this family predates the separation of the continents that we recognize in modern days.

Pears have been gathered by ancient man for over 6 millenia as documented by small carbonized fruits found in neolithic sites (circa 4,000 B.C.).   Some of these fruits were cut in half, and were probably dried for winter food.  Sumerian clay tablets from southern Iraq (circa 2700 B.C.) reference the medicinal value of the pear, while more recent Egyptian and Greek historical evidence provides documentation of the successful, early cultivation of this fruit.

Perry pears are the equivalent of cider apples, and have a long history of serving as a starting point for the production of a fermented drink that resembles champagne.  Although subsequently replaced by factory-produced beer, pear wine was drunk by Romans, became a mainstay for the Napoleonic army of old, and is claimed by the folks of Gloucestershire, England to be partially responsible for winning the First World War.

Some pear trees can  live for more than 300 years.  You can view ancient pear trees planted by Spanish colonists in some of the historical mission gardens of California.

Pears were not found in the Americas prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
